Need ideas for a repurposed fish tank? When my last fish died, I couldn’t bring myself to clean the tank just to refill it with more fish. It felt like too much hassle, and honestly, I was ready for a change. I had this huge 55-gallon aquarium taking up space, and I didn’t know what to do with it. I didn’t want to get rid of it. Especially because the centerpiece—a pirate ship my husband bought me—was way too cool to throw out. So, I did what any DIY-lover would do…I turned to Pinterest.

That’s when I went searching for repurposed fish tank ideas. I found so many fun and creative projects. From fairy gardens to herb displays, I had plenty of inspiration. And best of all, I had most of what I needed already at home.

Repurposed Fish Tank Projects Can Be Budget-Friendly

I knew I wanted to keep the pirate ship as my centerpiece. That ship is loaded with sentimental value and looks awesome, too. I gave the tank a good cleaning and added a fresh layer of sand. Then I grabbed an old plastic stump from the original tank setup and placed it next to the ship.

My big aloe plant was long overdue for a new pot. I broke it into smaller chunks and planted them inside the tank. It added fresh green life and didn’t cost me a thing. This repurposed fish tank project was already off to a great start.

Add Plants and Color to Your Tank

Next, I looked for more ways to fill in the space. I had a cute wooden planter filled with succulents that my son had given me. It looked too good to break apart, so I just placed the whole thing inside the tank. The wood added a nice natural touch.

During a Walmart run, I found two tiny cacti for just a few bucks. I planted them in front of the pirate ship. Suddenly, the tank felt like a desert oasis with a pirate twist.

Then came the surprise addition—my husband brought home a little fairy mushroom house from Dollar Tree. It didn’t match the pirate vibe at all, but I loved it anyway. I decided that side of the tank should become a fairy village. Because, why not?

To bring it all together, I found a bag of moss in the Walmart craft aisle. It cost less than $5 and made the perfect little grassy areas. The mix of greenery, desert plants, and fairy décor gave the repurposed fish tank so much personality.

Find Planter and Terrarium Sheet Moss at WalMart.

Lighting Makes Your Repurposed Fish Tank Shine

Once I had all the elements in place, something still felt missing—light. I ordered some LED strip lights from Amazon for $15. I stuck them around the top edge of the tank, and now it glows beautifully at night. You can find the lights I used HERE on Amazon.

They really made everything pop—the pirate ship looks like it’s coming to life, and they give the scene depth.

What I Spent on My Repurposed Fish Tank Project

One of the best parts of this makeover? It didn’t break the bank. Most of what I used, I already had at home. Here’s what I spent:

  • $10 for moss and two mini cacti
  • $1.25 for the fairy mushroom
  • $15 for LED strip lights

That’s a grand total of just $21 for a full transformation. This repurposed fish tank is now one of my favorite home decorations.

Final Thoughts

Turning my empty tank into something meaningful was the best decision ever. The pirate ship stays, the plants thrive, and the fairy side makes me smile. Every piece tells a story. Now I enjoy the tank more than I ever did when it had that evil fish… that’s a long story.

There are endless ways to try a repurposed fish tank project. Build a fairy village, grow herbs, create a jungle, or go full desert theme. There’s no right or wrong—just creativity.

If you’ve got an old tank lying around, don’t throw it out. Repurpose it! And if you’ve done your own repurposed fish tank project, I’d love to hear about it. Drop your ideas in the comments below!
